fashion: Christophe Decarnin’s departure from Balmain.

8 Apr

His designs have single handedly made the 80’s cool again.  His influence SO great that his was the show not only the high street but also his peers looked to as a thumb in the air for the season ahead, but alas no more Christophe at Balmain.

Cathy Horyn writing in the New York Times has hinted that Christophe Decarnin’s departure from the fashion house he made into such a success may be because of, rather than despite, the glory years of Balmania, and the consequent pressure to come up with a new, equally profitable formula.

Ms Horyn, who knows M. Decarnin personally, also points to the fact that he is a ‘shy and introverted,’ individual, who ‘may have been more vulnerable than others to that pressure.’ We will watch and wait and see whether Decarnin will chose to re-enter the fashion fray, or if he’ll go the way of Helmut Lang (who is now an artist), or Hedi Slimane (photographer).

One more thing – the successor to Decarnin is thought to be someone already working at Balmain, a former member of his team. Horyn wonders if this will turn out to be British stylist, Melanie Ward. She is an extremely interesting character, who made her name styling Kate Moss, and working with the photographer Corine Day, as part of a sort of dynamic trio. WATCH THIS SPACE, readers!

video: Kate Moss in Dior addict shock!

15 Mar

The 90-second spot of Kate Moss’s commercial for the upcoming Dior Addict lipstick, which hits stores next monthhas leaked. Directed by Jonas Akerlund, who also did Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” music video, this film, too, centers somewhat on paparazzi: it starts with Kate Moss in a luxe hotel room before panning to her chaffeured car ride and the subsequent paparazzi scrum (which meets her as she exits to take in the Spring 2011 Dior show). Runway footage is included, but no John Galliano appearance, of course.

fashion: Jacobs finds his fetish in bags at Vuitton

10 Mar

Which fashion great can still pull Kate, Naomi, Stella and Amber to the catwalk, well, who besides Gianni Versace?  Well step up  Marc Jacobs, who ended the Fall season with a triumphant show in Paris for Louis Vuitton, and after a week of ups and downs for it’s parent company LVMH (UP with the purchase of Bulgari, and DOWN with the sacking of star designer Galliano at Dior) this was certainly one of the high notes . . .

The show – which featured star turns from Amber Valletta, Stella Tennant, and no less than 2 of the most super of all Super’s (Naomi and Kate – who are both so super, they no longer even have surnames!) – was heavily focused on bags.  Much like the Burberry show in London, which was 90% coats and accessories, its clear where the great fashion houses are making their money.  Accessories, accessories, and erm, yup.  Accessories!  So big up the bags ladies – Vuitton says thats all you want anyway!

fashion: kate moss looses out in topshop shake up.

2 Sep

It was a marriage made in retail heaven, and made an international star out of not only the british supermodel, but also out of her ‘uncle phil’ the legendary head of the global cheap chic fashion chain, topshop.  Now though it does look like topshop gathers no moss as the mega famous chain has dropped its collection with the famous model (instyle).

Phillip Green said in a statement it was due to other commitments and the collection taking up too much of her time, whilst reports state that it was due to his fury at her branching out into fragrance and an exclusive handbag collection with longchamp earlier this year.  Either way what is clear is that the collection hasn’t been as commercially successful as the retailer had hoped, and as with the retailer parting ways with former head Jane Sheperdson could just be ‘uncle phils’ way of showing that the brand is bigger than the person . . .
